Halowy rekordzista Polski na 5000 m, biegacz Unii Hrubieszów Artur Kern, reprezentujący od 4 lat podczas studiów dodatkowo Uniwersytet Harding w USA, doskonale sobie radzi w rywalizacji międzyuczelnianej w biegach przełajowych plasując się zawsze w czołówce.
Starty rozpoczęły się już 19 września br. w Memphis i do tej pory odbyło się ich siedem, pozostały jeszcze dwa, a ten ostatni to najważniejszy, bo Mistrzostwa Dywizji, które odbędą się 22 listopada.
Artek Kern dotychczas startował pięć razy, w pierwszym biegu uplasował się na 4 pozycji, w Joplin i Stillwater powtórzył to miejsce, w Searcy przybiegł piąty, ale 25 października w Birmingham w stanie Alabama pobiegł wspaniale stając na podium na trzeciej pozycji. Wszystkie jego biegi zostały rozegrane na dystansie 8000 m osiągając czasy w granicach 24:30 do 25:50 w zależności od konfiguracji trasy.
Nie jest łatwo w tych biegach być w czołówce, ponieważ wszystkie biegi wygrał kolega z drużyny naszego zawodnika Daniel Kirwa z Kenii. W tym ostatnim biegu drugi był również Kenijczyk Philips Biwott, zaledwie o 2 sekundy przed Artkiem, a za Kernem dalsi Kenijczycy Juliusz Kosgei i James Cheruiyot (indywidualny Mistrz Dywizji z 2005 r.).
Każdy uniwersytet jest naszpikowany wysokiej klasy zawodnikami z różnych stron świata. Drużyna Uniwersytetu Harding liczy 14 zawodników, w tym jeszcze jeden Polak Wojciech Kopeć.

Steve Guymon is in his sixth year as head men and women’s cross country and track coach. He replaced Dr. Bryan Phillips, who moved into teaching full-time.
Guymon has continued to build on the strong tradition of Harding cross country and track, directing the Bison cross-country team to five straight Gulf South Conference and NCAA II South Region championships. Harding has placed in the top 10 nationally in each of the last four seasons. The Lady Bisons have three GSC championships in Guymon’s five years, earned the 2006 South Region title, and have four top 10 national finishes in the last four years.
Guymon’s cross-country athletes have earned 20 All-America honors during his tenure at Harding.
Under Guymon, the Bison track team has qualified for four indoor and five outdoor national meets. In 2007, the Harding men placed 14th nationally outdoors and placed 16th nationally indoors.
Three Bison runners have won national championships under Guymon (Jacob Rotich, 10,000 meters, 2004; Przemek Bobrowski, 1,500 meters, 2006; and Julius Kosgei, 10,000 meters, 2006).
The Lady Bisons have reached both the indoor and outdoor national meets four times during Guymon’s time at Harding. Janet Kogo won three national championships in 2005.
Harding’s track athletes have garnered 48 All-America honors during Guymon’s five seasons as head coach.
Guymon came to Harding from Cordova High School where he led Cordova to third place in the TSSAA State Championship in 2001. He was also named “Best of the Preps” Track Coach of the Year by the Memphis Commercial Appeal, TSSAA Section 4AAA Track Coach of the Year, and TSSAA Region 7 Track Coach of the Year and earned TSSAA Region 7 Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2000.
Prior to his five-year tenure at Cordova, Guymon spent ten years as the recruiting coordinator and assistant cross country/track coach at the University of Kansas. During his time with the Jayhawks, he coached 15 All-Americans and 15 Big Eight individual champions.
Guymon taught and coached three years at Harding Academy from 1985-87 and started his career in 1984 in the Edmond, Okla., public school system.
The Memphis, Tenn., native earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Oklahoma Christian University in 1984. Guymon earned a Master’s Degree in Education and Sports Administration from Kansas in 1996.
